Techcrunch is reporting today that Facebook has passed Blogger as the social media site with the most unique visitors.
Yes, we all saw this coming. Facebook's community depth and range of
services simply dwarf Blogger. Entertaining, simple-to-use
applications, easy Friending, quick commenting and Group interaction
simply give people a reason to stay on Facebook longer and come back
more often.
Blogger deserves credit for being able to build such a massive user-base solely on blogging; yet it was only a matter of time before users became attracted to new services. Yet, there is also a lesson here. Users now demand social media, and they demand it on multiple levels. To build a community, it's no longer enough to offer one channel. There have to be others. Blogging, forums, content-sharing and socializing around events are necessary to build strong communities. What will overtake Twitter? Or is it a service that hasn't even launched?
